A couple of months ago we caught up with Nia Ekanem. When we first met him he was busking in Camden, we had a chat and he came over to tell us more about what he's up to and took a walk down the canal with him.

You moved down from Birmingham for music, what was the scene like there?  The scene in Birmingham compared to London is different, in my field of music, acoustic soul, is small. You can only perform in the same place for so long and then you want to get out.

You cover a couple of big names brilliantly, who are your biggest influences? My biggest influences, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Nina Simone, John Mayer... I could go on.

There’s a heavy gospel, soul sound to your tracks has the church had a big influence in your sounds? Yes, it has. I played a lot in church growing up, keyboard, drums, sang a little, so being around that for so long will reflect in the sound of my songs.

Busking in London seems like a tough gig. Where are the best and worst spots? It's tough if you just focus on that. I try to have fun with it and not focus on the best and worst spots. I hate working in bars and restaurants so busking is the only way to get the freedom to focus on music. But I have to say that Camden town is up there.

What’s the best thing that’s happened when you’ve been busking?I wasn't supposed to do this, but I did a quick session in the underground station and pretty much shut down the whole place. All I saw were at least 20 + people just watching, missing their trains etc. Lucky no one came down to stop me from performing.

You released it’s your love EP a couple months back and recently the single Fadin' which you can check out below. What can we expect from you in your new music coming up?  A lot of new singles, videos, gigs and another headline show, 100%!

How does your writing process work does the music or the lyrics come first? The music always comes first with me, whether that's on guitar on piano, but I find it hard to just write without a sound.

Where can we next see you play in London? I've got a few upcoming shows which I will be announcing on my socials @niaekanem :)

Looking forward to hearing more dude!
